What is courier fleet insurance?

Courier fleet insurance provides cover for multiple delivery vans and drivers under one policy.

With one renewal date, you can easily add or remove fleet vehicles or drivers on your policy. You can also add any other covers your business needs, including insurance for goods in transit, public liability, employers’ liability, business premises and more.

Fleet insurance makes it easy to manage several vehicles, while also costing less than individual courier van policies.

Who needs courier fleet insurance?

If you run a courier business and have at least three delivery vans, then you could benefit from a courier fleet van insurance policy.

It can be a headache insuring individual vans and drivers, not to mention costly. By including all of them on one policy, you have greater flexibility for drivers to carry out their work in different vans. The more vans you cover, the cheaper your policy can be to insure each one.

Typically, fleets vary in size from five vehicles to 100 or more. A fleet policy gives you the flexibility to change the vehicles and drivers covered. You can also keep track of your vehicles on the road with optional telematics hardware and software.

What is included in courier fleet van insurance?

Courier fleet insurance includes:

  • Multi-van cover on a third-party, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive basis – or a mixture of these covers.
  • Cover for additional vehicles such as motorbikes or cars as part of your fleet.

In addition to vehicle cover, your courier fleet policy can also cover:

  • Public liability and employers’ liability – up to £10m of cover for injury claims from members of the public or your employees.
  • Goods in transit – to protect items against damage, theft or loss in transit. Up to £50,000 of cover is available for each vehicle load.
  • Telematics – installation of hardware and software that allows you to track your fleet in real time, monitor and record incidents and accidents, and provide driver training.
  • Cover for buildings – commercial insurance to cover offices and depots.

How much does courier insurance cost?

While the cost of insuring a single courier van starts around £86.33 a month*, providing a price for a fleet is much more complicated.

All courier fleets are different, so the cost of insurance depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • The number of vehicles in your fleet
  • Vehicle makes and models
  • The confirmed claims experience (CCE) for your fleet
  • The number of drivers, and their experience
  • Motoring convictions for drivers
  • The location of your vehicles
  • The delivery radius covered
  • Installation of telematics in vehicles
  • Security of any premises
  • The levels of cover required

As you can see, there are lots of factors that can affect the cost of cover. If you have your confirmed claims experience, this makes it easier and quicker to get quotes from our panel of insurers, offering you a competitive price for the level of cover you need.

For a bespoke fleet insurance quote, please call us with as much information as possible on your fleet.

Am I eligible for courier fleet van insurance?

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need goods in transit insurance?

Goods in transit insurance is not a legal requirement, but it is highly recommended. Without goods in transit cover, you could be held liable for the costs of damaged, lost or stolen goods you are carrying. Some companies and local authorities will also insist on goods in transit cover before employing your services, so it makes sense to get cover. Goods in transit insurance removes the headache of liability for accidents, with a limit of cover of up to £50,000 per load.
  2. Do I need public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement, but it could ruin your business if you don’t have it. A single expensive injury claim from a member of the public could cost hundreds of thousands, or even millions of pounds, in damages. Even if it is ruled not to be your fault, you will still be liable for the costs of defending the claim. Given the relatively low cost of insurance, public liability cover is a sensible option.
  3. What can I transport under courier insurance?

Courier insurance covers most of the everyday items a courier is likely to carry, usually be parcels, packages or newspapers. We can cover other items as part of courier fleet deliveries, including hazardous materials.
  4. What’s the difference between courier insurance and haulage insurance?

Couriers generally drive vans up to 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, picking up goods from a depot and delivering them to multiple addresses. Haulage typically involves larger vehicles (e.g. trucks), which pick up a large number of items to deliver to destinations over longer distances.
  5. Is my courier insurance valid for deliveries abroad?

Most courier policies will allow you to make deliveries to certain EU countries. Check with us if this is something you will be doing, so we can ensure you have the right insurance cover.
  6. How many vehicles are covered under courier fleet insurance?

For courier fleet insurance, you must have a minimum of three vehicles. There is no limit to the number of vehicles you can cover, though the cost of cover will increase with the number of vehicles on your policy. However, the more vehicles you add, the cheaper it generally becomes to insure each individual vehicle – a benefit of business fleet insurance.
